Secretary General Charlotte Slente

Charlotte Slente was appointed Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council in 2019, where she leads the organization’s humanitarian efforts in response to both emerging and protracted crises across approximately 40 countries, supported by a team of over 8,000 dedicated staff.

Prior to joining the Danish Refugee Council, Charlotte had a long and distinguished career with the Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, holding multiple senior leadership roles central to Denmark’s development and humanitarian policies.

Her key positions included State Secretary for Development Policy in which position she directed the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), managing Denmark’s international development and humanitarian policies and initiatives.

As Under-Secretary of State for Global Politics and Security she headed foreign policy departments responsible for Denmark’s relations to Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. She also held positions as Ambassador for Fragile States and Under-Secretary of State for Consular Affairs.

Throughout her career, Charlotte has also served in senior roles at Danish embassies in Latin America and the Middle East, including postings as Ambassador, furthering Denmark’s bilateral relations and development objectives worldwide.

Charlotte Slente began her career with UNDP where she worked for three years in Equatorial Guinea in Central Africa on support to governance reforms and local development. She holds a Master of Science in International Business Administration and Modern Languages from Copenhagen Business School.

She speaks fluent Danish, English and Spanish.
