DRC has been present in Sudan since 2004, delivering life-saving programming in protection, emergency response, shelter, food security and livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, camp management, and humanitarian mine action. DRC has implemented projects in Central Darfur, South Darfur, South Kordofan, Gedaref, Kassala, and Khartoum states. Sudan hosts one of the largest displaced populations in Africa, with over 3.7 million internally displaced people and over 1.1 million refugees from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Chad, Yemen and Syria. Against a background of political crisis, Sudan faces economic and social turmoil, with sharp increases in food and energy costs, further exacerbated by disease outbreaks and ongoing conflict.

About the job

Under the supervision of the WASH and Infrastructure Officer, the assistant supports the routine and daily implementation and administration of the WASH and Infrastructure projects for DRC in (Gadaref), including supporting organizing and supervising volunteer teams, monitoring of water quality/chlorination processes, construction teams, assessment and design of appropriate interventions and overseeing project implementation supporting IDPs and host communities.

The WASH and infrastructure Assistant is also responsible for the realization of hygiene promotion campaigns and awareness sessions, cleaning campaigns, and distribution of hygiene kits. He/She maintains good coordination with the WASH team, and community mobilizers to ensure the quality of the implemented activities and provide technical support for all hygiene-related issues. He/she ensures that DRC’s technical recommendations and procedures are followed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Evaluate hygiene risk and support sensitization activities:

  • Through field visits, observation and surveys the Assistant should be able to identify and evaluate the hygiene risk in the community.
  • The Hygiene Promotion Assistant will assess the situation and practices on water management and sanitation, (drinking water source, collection, transport and storage, water treatment, food management, waste management and sanitation)
  • Under the responsibility of the team lead, participate in the logistical and administrative organization, planning and preparation of field operations.
  • Conduct sensitization activities with beneficiaries by using DRC resources; sending messages determined by the DRC official in charge of operations and adapting methods to the different populations
  • Helping identify and train key persons regarding the sensitization themes
  • Participate in the creation and monitoring of committees, and the training of its members
  • Monitor and distribute sensitization activity reports

Program - Infrastructure

Program

  • Supporting as part of the team in the assessment, design, Bill of Quantities (BoQ) preparations, setup, planning, and implementation of all the WASH & Infrastructure projects
  • Follow up the water chlorination and water testing at the water points and household levels and be in charge of the water chlorination/testing database, making it available for review by the WASH officer/ Infrastructure Coordinator
  • Daily monitoring and reporting on all construction activities related to the WASH projects.
  • Daily update and management of data-gathering and tracking tools used to monitor the project;
  • Supporting community Focus Group Discussions pertaining to the project in partnership and/or consultation with MEAL and Protection teams.
  • Ensure the DRC Code of Conduct is understood, acknowledged in writing, and followed by the project staff and all volunteer labor, and infractions are reported in an appropriate and timely manner;
  • Organize and participate in distribution activities
  • Participate in the beneficiary identification process
  • Ensure the completion and filing of distribution justification documents

Reporting/communication

  • Keep files and monitoring archived at the DRC offices accessible to the Team Leader
  • Under the supervision of the team lead, redact activity reports
  • Collect and transmit to the team lead or program in-charge statistics related to the sensitization and training activities
  • Participate in seminars and training workshops useful to the accomplishment of sensitization activities and the attainment of project objectives
  • Report to team lead on the evolution of activities and specific tasks assigned, problems encountered, quality of relations with beneficiaries and the involvement of communities
  • Remain in touch with the population and local authorities to understand needs, complaints, and major events that may have an impact on the activities of DRC, and in terms of operations perceptions
  • Raise any information or difficulties related to DRC activities or security issues
  • Collaborate with the administration and local authorities

Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • A university degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Water /Civil Engineering, or other related technical subject is desirable
  • Minimum 1 - 2 years’ relevant experience within a humanitarian organization in, Public health, Hygiene Promotion, Community Mobilization, Engineering, or WASH infrastructure
  • Good knowledge of the area
  • Good experience of working directly with Sudanese and Refugees communities and local authorities
  • Good communications skills; experience with dealing with Communities; good written and spoken Arabic
  • English is an advantage
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic report-writing ability

Education:

  • At least high school degree, university degree is preferred in the areas of; Public Health, Environmental Health, Water /Civil Engineering, Project Management, Public Administration or other related subject

Languages:

  • Fluent in both oral and written English,
  • Arabic

Contract length: 9 Months

Level: I. Non-manager

Salary range: 826-932 USD

Location: Gadaref
