Originally living in Sudan, Nyibol's life took a drastic turn when the conflict escalated, forcing her to make the heart-wrenching decision to flee with her eight children.
With each step she took, she left behind cherished memories and possessions, but her priority was to protect her children and give them a chance at a better life.
The journey was fraught with danger and uncertainty. Traveling by bus for an entire day to reach the border with South Sudan, Nyibol and her children were filled with fear, knowing that rebels might be lurking along the route.
However, her determination to find safety for her family outweighed the fear, and they pressed on.
On the 28th of May, they arrived at the Joda reception centre, one step closer to safety. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) assisted them in reaching the Transit Centre in Renk on the 2nd of June.
Although they had found refuge, their final destination remained distant and inaccessible by road from their current location in Renk.
It would take a three-day boat journey down the Nile to the town of Malakal, followed by a flight to the capital of Northen Bahar El Ghazal State, Aweil and another one-day journey by road to her final destination.
Nyibol was identified by Meling Irene, a Protection Specialist with DRC’s Mobile Response Team working on the Sudan Response in Renk, and she was supported by DRC with Individual Protection Assistance (IPA) because she needed to seek urgent medical attention.
Yet, amidst the struggles, Nyibol held on to hope and gratitude. She expressed her heartfelt thanks to DRC for supporting her with IPA when she was at her weakest.
When illness struck her, rendering her unable to walk to the hospital for treatment, the cash assistance from DRC enabled her to seek medical help and return to the Transit Centre after receiving the necessary health care.
Now, she is much healthier and able to care for her children, eagerly anticipating the journey that will lead them to a fresh start in their final destination.
Despite the hardships she and her children have endured, she remains optimistic about the future.
Her determination to overcome obstacles and her unwavering love for her children have carried her this far, and they will undoubtedly guide her as she takes the final steps of her journey to a new beginning.
As Nyibol and her children wait for the much-needed assistance with transportation, their story is a touching reminder of the countless individuals and families who continue to be displaced by the conflict in Sudan.
Nyibol's hope and determination shine as a beacon of light amidst the darkness of uncertainty, reminding us all of the power of resilience and the strength that comes from a mother's love.
