Akanya Rose Mary: A Decade of Dedication and Service in Humanitarian Work

Among these unsung heroes is Akanya Rose Mary, whose 11-year journey as a humanitarian worker shows us resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment.
A Journey of Service Across Nations and Cultures
Akanya Rose Mary's humanitarian career has spanned over a decade, marked by her roles with prominent organizations such as Intersos, International Rescue Committee (IRC), International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), Oxfam, and currently, Danish Refugee Council (DRC).
Her diverse roles have included positions as a Gender Officer, GBV Response Officer, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Officer, and Protection Officer.
Her work has taken her to various states in South Sudan, exposing her to different cultures and people. This exposure has not only enriched her understanding of the country but also deepened her empathy and effectiveness as a humanitarian worker.
Akanya says, working in the humanitarian field has been amazing and has helped people like her learn about different cultures and gain invaluable experience.
Bringing Hope and Joy to Women and Girls in South Sudan
One of the most fulfilling aspects of Akanya's work has been her ability to make a tangible difference in the lives of women in South Sudan.
In March of this year, she was part of the team that established DRC’s Women and Girls Friendly Space in Aweil East.
Through her dedication, Akanya has seen the transformative power of humanitarian aid firsthand. "Seeing communities, especially women, smile because of our work makes me happy and hopeful," she says. "It shows that we can restore lost hope in women and girls through our activities."
Her commitment to gender equality and protection has not only benefited those she serves but also enriched her own life. "Working in the protection field has given me knowledge and made me feel respected and valued at home and in the community," she says.
Facing Challenges with Grace and Resilience
Despite the rewards, Akanya's journey has not been without its challenges. As a married woman, balancing her professional and personal responsibilities has often been a source of conflict.
"Being deployed in the field for long periods can cause tension at home," she explains. "We end up relying on maids to manage the household, which adds stress as they can’t step in to take all our responsibilities."
The hardships extend to her work environment, where humanitarian workers face numerous dangers, especially during emergencies like floods. "Women are exposed to many risks, including infections and diseases," she notes.
The emotional toll of these challenges, combined with the gender inequality she encounters, adds to the difficulty. "There is still a perception that men are superior and should make all decisions. Women who work and earn money are often viewed with suspicion."
These stereotypes and societal pressures have personal consequences, particularly affecting family dynamics and reproductive choices. "There is tension within families, with women having to choose between their careers and having children, due to misconceptions," Akanya says.
Advice for Young Girls Aspiring to Join Humanitarian Work
Despite the challenges, Akanya remains passionate about her work and encourages young girls to pursue careers in humanitarianism. "It's not easy to balance humanitarian work and family life, but it is rewarding," she advises. "It's important to earn your own income and not rely solely on a man. Be productive and follow your dreams."
She emphasizes the importance of education as a foundation for a successful future. "Encourage young girls to continue their education so they can be productive in the future," she urges.
