Moldova: Enhancing Healthcare Support for Refugees in Moldova

In a significant stride towards improving healthcare services for refugees, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) in partnership with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova, has successfully concluded a vital healthcare support initiative. This collaborative effort, spanning from January 2023 to June 2024, aimed to bolster medical care in a local refugee center by funding the salary of a dedicated doctor.

Throughout the 18-month period, the initiative provided essential medical services to 917 refugees, ensuring that those in need received timely and professional healthcare. The support from DRC played a crucial role in addressing the healthcare needs of refugees, who often face significant barriers in accessing medical care.

Dr. Aurelia Butu, the doctor whose salary was funded by the DRC, expressed her gratitude and shared her experience.

“Thanks to the support of the Danish Refugee Council, I was employed as a doctor in the Asylum Accommodation Center for migrants. On average 60 people a month stay in the center. It was possible to provide medical care to all the residents who were coming. About 15 people with acute or chronic health problems were consulted weekly. If necessary, the patients were referred for laboratory investigations, functional explorations and consultations with medical specialists. Patients were assisted with free medicines from the doctor's office in emergency cases. For patients who required treatment cures, prescriptions for medicines were prescribed on time and monitored during the treatment. Due to the presence of the doctor in the Asylum Center, it was possible to monitor during the year all patients with Hypertonic Disease, Diabetes mellitus and pregnant women”

The collaboration between the DRC and the Ministry of Internal Affairs highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing the complex needs of refugee populations. By ensuring access to healthcare, this initiative not only improved the well-being of refugees but also strengthened the overall resilience of the refugee community in Moldova.

As the initiative concludes, the Danish Refugee Council reaffirms its commitment to supporting refugees worldwide and continues to explore opportunities for collaboration with local and international partners to enhance the lives of displaced individuals.
