Easing the winter for vulnerable families in Kosovo

DRC is present in Kosovo since 1998 through a combination of activities that aim to respond to urgent humanitarian needs and at the same time facilitate durable solutions to protracted displacement. Here, winter equals recurring struggles and needs for urgent aid to get by.

Finding resources - when there are none - to feed the family, buy medicine or even heat a home is a reality for many vulnerable and post-conflict affected people and entire communities in parts of Kosovo. Therefore, DRC -through its project ‘Supporting Social Entrepreneurship and Promoting Socio-economic Empowerment in Minority Communities in Kosovo’ - has delivered vouchers for food and hygiene to vulnerable families from Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian communities in Mitrovicë/a South.

During the early winter months of November and December 2022, DRC provided 1,415 vouchers to 349 vulnerable households with a total of 1,826 members. The vouchers are providing an opportunity to buy items that are needed, but often not prioritised by vulnerable households if there is a need to choose between securing enough food, pay rent or heat up a home which has become increasingly challenging this winter due to the energy crisis.

This project in Kosovo is financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), represented by the Swedish Embassy in Pristina, supported and implemented by DRC Kosovo.
