Former DRC Secretary General Arne Piel Christensen has passed away
For more than 30 years, Arne Piel Christensen headed the Danish Refugee Council. On Wednesday 30 August, he passed away at the age of 85.
For three decades, Arne Piel Christensen was the official face of the DRC Danish Refugee Council. He became Secretary General in 1967 and remained in office until 1998, when he retired. Arne Piel Christensen was known for his great commitment to humanitarian work and the refugee cause.
In the 1960s, as more refugees began entering Denmark in larger numbers, and being at the forefront of the Danish Refugee Council, Arne Piel Christensen contributed to advocating and making the refugee cause better known and understood among the Danish population.
As Secretary General, Arne Piel Christensen was never concerned about taking the lead. He was known as a nice and calm man, who was an idealist and persistent in his fight for the cause, and who was never afraid of engaging in discussions with politicians at the Danish Parliament, Christiansborg.
"I have the greatest respect for the immense effort that Arne Piel Christensen made for more than 30 years as Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council. He seriously put the refugee cause on the agenda in Denmark, and for three decades he defended the rights of refugees and fought for aid to refugees in the world's trouble spots. He led the foundation for the global organisation that DRC is today", says Secretary General, Charlotte Slente.
After his retirement, Arne Piel Christensen continued his work for and commitment to the refugee cause. He was appointed as director of the international organisation OSCE, where was involved in building democracy in Kosovo following the Balkan conflict in the 1990s. He held this position for three years until 2001.
Since then, Arne Piel Christensen has also been a member of the Danish Refugee Board and president of the humanitarian cooperation in Voice.

I over 30 år stod Arne Piel Christensen i spidsen for Dansk Flygtningehjælp. Onsdag sov han stille ind i en alder af 85 år.
Igennem tre årtier var Arne Piel Christensen Dansk Flygtningehjælps officielle ansigt. Han blev generalsekretær i 1967 og blev på posten til 1998, hvor han stoppede. Arne Piel Christensen var kendt for sit store engagement i humanitært arbejde og flygtningesagen
I 1960’erne begyndte der for alvor at komme flygtninge til Danmark, og som frontfigur for Dansk Flygtningehjælp var Arne Piel Christensen med til at gøre flygtninge til en folkesag.
”Jeg har den største respekt for den kæmpe indsats, som Arne Piel Christensen i mere end 30 år ydede som generalsekretær for Dansk Flygtningehjælp. Han satte for alvor flygtningesagen på dagsordenen i Danmark, og i tre årtier forsvarede han flygtninges rettigheder og kæmpede for hjælp til flygtninge i verdens brændpunkter. Han var med til at lægge grundstenene for den globale organisation som DRC Dansk Flygtningehjælp er i dag. Æret være Arnes minde”, siger generalsekretær, Charlotte Slente.
Som generalsekretær var Arne Piel Christensen ikke bange for at gå foran. Han var kendt som en rar og rolig mand, der var idealist og vedholdende i sig kamp for sagen, og han var ikke bange for at tage diskussioner med politikerne på Christiansborg.
Efter Arne Piel Christensen stoppede i Dansk Flygtningehjælp, fortsatte han sit arbejde og engagement for flygtninges sag. Han blev direktør i den internationale organisation OSCE, hvor han fik ansvaret for opbygningen af demokrati i Kosovo efter urolighederne på Balkan i 1990’erne. Denne stilling havde han i tre år indtil 2001.
Siden har Arne Piel Christensen også været medlem af Flygtningenævnet og præsident for den humanitære samarbejdsorganisation i Voice.
