Early Life and Refugee Experience:

Oler's story began in Uganda in March 1998 when he was forced to flee his homeland and become a refugee. The following decade presented immense challenges as he navigated life in refugee camps, enduring sickness, hunger, and the constant threat of violence.

Despite these harsh adversities, Oler persevered, finding solace and support from the Catholic Church, which facilitated his education from primary through to secondary school in the refugee camp of Agogo -Acholpii Refugee Camp.

Oler's pursuit of education continued when he joined the seminary for four years, followed by two years at a higher secondary school in Masindi. His determination led him to complete a high school diploma, paving the way for his entry into the workforce.

Joining DRC:

Oler's professional journey with DRC started in August 2012, and he officially rejoined in October 2013. Throughout his time with DRC, Oler has continuously demonstrated his commitment to creating an environment conducive to counseling, supporting and advocating for refugees.

He emphasizes the significance of teamwork and how the supportive nature of DRC as an organization significantly motivates him.

With his rich experience of near-death encounters, battling illness, and surviving on minimal resources, Oler brings a unique and deeply personal perspective to his work.

He understands the complexities and struggles faced by refugees, and his commitment reflects his desire to ensure others do not endure the same hardships.

A Message to the World:

Oler’s message is clear: the world must unite to address the causes of displacement, such as conflict and natural disasters, swiftly and effectively. He stresses the importance of global solidarity and proactive measures to prevent suffering and loss of life.

He believes by investing in the younger generations and fostering peace, we can create a world where people are not forced to flee their homes in search of safety and opportunity.

Oler embodies the spirit of World Refugee Day. His journey from a refugee to a humanitarian worker who continues to make a positive change serves as an inspiration to us all.

Through his story, we are reminded of the importance of unity, support, and unwavering commitment to those displaced by conflict and disaster.

This story highlights the profound impact of individuals like Oler, whose personal experiences and professional contributions continue to inspire and drive positive change in the world.

Working with DRC is more than just a job; it's being part of a community dedicated to providing refugees with the necessary tools and resources to rebuild their lives. Compared to other, less supportive work settings, this positive environment truly emphasizes the importance of collaboration and mutual respect.
