Kosovo: Vulnerable populations at risk from effects of climate change

A natural disaster such as flooding has a highly harmful impact on a society or community following a natural hazard event. It will often appear without warning and can wipe out everything that comes its way. This can have a significant impact on the population in general but specifically will make life even harder for already vulnerable individuals and entire communities.

During floods in January 2023, many families across multiple municipalities in Kosovo lost almost everything. Roma community members living in Roma Mahalla/Mahala were no exception. Many households had to be evacuated to safer locations and could return only after the water moved away. Their houses were severely damaged and basically living in those houses was almost impossible.

DRC Kosovo, with the funds from German Embassy in Pristina and in close cooperation with local government stakeholders and other partners, assisted with minor shelter repair for some of the most vulnerable households of Roma community living in Mitrovicë/a South. Among the four households that are supported, is a single mother with her four minor children.

This assistance means a lot for me and my family. My children and I can sleep now comfortably. The works are done very well, I just cannot find words to thank you enough,” stated Shermina, single mother in Roma Mahalla/Mahala.

DRC Kosovo has assisted vulnerable households from marginalised communities here since 1998 and is committed to the motto: Leaving no one behind!
