Multipurpose Cash Assistance: Empowering Families to Overcome Adversity in Yemen

Yemen's conflict which erupted in 2015, has caused millions of persons to endure profound suffering. Nine years of relentless conflict and economic decline have left two-thirds of the population in desperate need, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in the most fragile nation in the Middle East.

Forced into dire circumstances, many Yemenis, like Hanieah Qa’ed, have resorted to negative coping strategies, from accumulating debt to skipping meals. Yet, the Cash Consortium of Yemen's (CCY) intervention is providing a lifeline, reducing dependence on these desperate measures.

Across 13 Yemeni governorates, including Lahj in South Yemen, CCY is empowering vulnerable families through Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA), to enable them address their most pressing needs with dignity.

Funded by the European Union and hosted by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), CCY collaborates with partners like Solidarities International (SI), the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Mercy Corps, and Acted to deliver impactful assistance where it is needed most.

Hanieah's Story

Amidst the hardships, Hanieah Qa’ed, a widow grappling with the heavy responsibility of providing for three children afflicted with sickle cell disease, has found solace through CCY's intervention.

"When the conflict started, we were thrust into a humiliating existence, forced from our homes and stripped of our dignity," shares Hanieah.

"But with CCY's support, we found a glimmer of hope."

With unwavering determination, Hanieah seized the opportunity afforded by CCY's assistance to treat her children, pay part of the accumulated debt and recover the number of their daily meals after reducing it due to financial hardship.

"I used the funds to mainly to treat my three children," she reveals.

"Now, I can afford medical treatment, send them to school, and repay our debts. While life may not be perfect, we are in a better place thanks to DRC and the EU, who offered their help when we needed it most."

Hanieah's story powerfully demonstrates the transformative impact of CCY's intervention. Her experience exemplifies hope and resilience, showing how beneficiaries like her significantly reduce their reliance on negative coping strategies.
