Danish Refugee Council (DRC) join forces with the Response Innovation Lab (RIL) alliance to enhance locally led innovation in support of climate and conflict adaptation in humanitarian contexts.

Posted on 07 Nov 2023

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) proudly joins the Response Innovation Lab (RIL), an innovation alliance convened by Save the Children International, Civic UK, Oxfam, and World Vision. RIL focuses on sustainable, locally led innovation driven by empowered communities and local ecosystems.

DRC's Strategy 2025 aims to enhance locally led programs and innovative approaches in humanitarian response, emphasizing climate resilience and conflict resilience. DRC collaborates with RIL to address these challenges together.

The partnership recognizes communities' ability to adapt to climate change and seeks to work closely with local ecosystems and capacities.

"Communities often develop innovative adaptation approaches at a faster pace than traditional humanitarian organizations can orchestrate – simple put, because it’s their lives at risk," says Morten Högnesen, head of DRC Programme Innovation and Business Engagement.

DRC plans to empower community-level innovation through RIL's partnership, particularly in East Africa's South Sudan and Somalia, two contexts grappling with the challenges of climate change and displacement.

The collaboration utilizes RIL's tools and methodologies to accelerate program innovation, localize focus areas like conflict and climate resilience, and will commence in Somalia and South Sudan. By leveraging local knowledge, DRC aims to scale up programming and localize humanitarian efforts effectively by working with local partners to address climate adaptation challenges and find solutions, fostering sustainable outcomes.

Through community engagement, a bottom-up approach, and knowledge sharing, DRC, RIL, and partners are dedicated to supporting communities in adapting to climate change's realities sustainably.
